End of summer, NO!! Say it isn’t so!!

Has it really been over a year since I’ve been here in the South? Time keeps moving way too fast. I thought by now I would be settled in a killer house, making a good living and having beach parties with all my new friends. (I still have the Frankie Avalon/ Annette Funicello still image still in my head.)

Life has its own schedule. All we can do is put out our intention and ask the universe to help.

Since I’ve been here I’ve developed three jobs for myself, (once I realized that I have no real skills, hence no employment). It’s challenging to find a job when you don’t know what you are looking for or what you’re qualified to do. Let’s see… ex yoga studio owner/ current yoga teacher wants job in Myrtle Beach, SC. What are my skills: Witty repartee? Making flyers? Able to stand on my head and get others to do it too? 101 ways to use a folding metal chair? What jobs should I be seeking?
paddleboardNeedless to say I didn’t find anything out there that seemed like a good fit. So I decided to keep teaching yoga; it’s the gift that keeps on giving. With all the changes that have been going on, yoga is the one constant thing. It’s a universal haven. We get a lot of tourists here, and since I’m at a fairly new studio a lot of Newbie’s also. They might be a bit nervous about coming into a new studio and working out the logistics of where to put their mat, how to pay, is the class going to be too hard or too easy? But as soon as you begin the class, you can see it in their eyes. They are at home on their mat. From their first sun salutation or dog pose, they begin to relax. Same thing when I teach. It’s a good feeling when the breath starts slowing down and the words start flowing out, (yes complete with sarcasm).
backbendMy other job is at my sister’s clinic, called One Stop Therapy 4 Kids. We have two full time speech therapists and one occupational therapist. I’ve learned so much there. I’m amazed at the progress the kids make with one to one therapy. Now I’m starting to create something for the parents also. They are stretched to the max with a special needs child.

I also became an eco-friendly sales rep for yoga products. Basically when I feel the need to get away, I hit the road and travel through SC and NC stopping to visit friends and every yoga studio along the way. I show them what I have, take a class make a friend and move on. Most of the time it works out well, but occasionally I actually have to become a genuine sales person.

I’m trying really hard to create another life here, but I forget to be patient. I didn’t develop the wonderful life in California overnight. It’s funny how I forget that sometimes.
footballI’m really not even sure of where I’m supposed to be creating that life. I mean where am I am I supposed to put down roots, buy, a house and settle down?

Some people do know. They are born and raised in the same place and have only left in maybe some pockets of time to go to school or try some crazy dream that lured them away. But they know that they are exactly where they should be and are content to stay there.

Then there are people like me who have wandered the globe and scattered some seeds without staying long enough to let them root. That’s why the idea of something like buying a house sounds more like a death sentence than a homey prospect.

I would love to put down roots and settle somewhere. But I’m just not sure where to do that. I’m here now because it’s time for me to be close to the family and my east coast friends. And it feels good to be back in the South again.
sunsetWhat I do know is that wherever I go I need a community of people around me. I’m finding that is a huge part of settling down. My little community here in Myrtle Beach is slowly growing. A big part of creating that is through working my three jobs. Plus I just had my first beach party, so things are definitely looking up!!

I leave you with this from — Anna Quindlen I “A Short Guide to a Happy Life”

“The best piece of advice I could give anyone is pretty simple: get a life. A real life, not a manic pursuit of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house. Do you think you’d care so very much about those things if you developed an aneurysm one afternoon, or found a lump in your breast while in the shower? Get a life in which you notice the smell of salt water pushing itself on a breeze over the dunes, a life in which you stop and watch how a red-tailed hawk circles over a pond and a stand of pines. Get a life in which you pay attention to the baby as she scowls with concentration when she tries to pick up a Cheerio with her thumb and first finger. Turn off your cell phone. Turn off your regular phone, for that matter. Keep still. Be present. Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure, it is work. Each time I look at my diploma, I remember that I am still a student, still learning every day how to be human.“
